Learn to Row and You
So maybe you weren’t able to come to our meeting on Thursday, but you’re really itching to hit the water and wanna know whats the deal for the Learn to Row Season. Luckily, you’re friendly neighborhood UART exec is here to lay it all down.
As a new member of the University of Alberta Rowing team, your fall begins in two phases: LTR and Novice (which will be discussed in a later post).
For all new rowers who have never held an oar before you begin your journey as a Learn to Row Participant which includes:
- 3.5 weeks of training
- Racing at both the Head of the North Saskatchewan and Head of the Weasel
Training will consist of both land and on the water sessions to teach proper technique on the ergometer and in Eights which you will also be racing in. Training while the river is not frozen over will take place at the Edmonton Rowing Club Facilities across from Laurier Park (the red points on the map below).
Training Sessions are broken up into 4:30pm and 5:00pm launch groups
- Groups A1/A2 will train Monday and Wednesday
- Groups B1/B2 will train Tuesday and Thursday
Of course, what does all this training come down to. RACING! The Regattas (races) you compete in include:
- Head of the North Saskatchewan
- September 27
- Held on the same river you will be training on
- Head of the Weasel/Dino Sprints
- October 4
- Held on the Glenmore Reservoir in Calgary
If you’re liking the sound of what you’re reading, register at the Activity Registration Zone in Van Vilet. The cost of LTR is $85 dollars which covers boat rentals/entry fees, access to ERC facilities, coaching, transportation for Head of the Weasel, and a sweet UART Tank.
If you have any questions please feel free to shoot us an email at crrowing@ualberta.ca or message us on our facebook page.
Attention… Row!
As June is just a sleep away, the 2014 sprint season is also finally upon the Edmonton athletes. While the university is still in the off season, 28 UART rowers will be joining the Edmonton Rowing Club until fall rolls around. In two weeks ERC will be going to their first regatta, and we expect a strong showing from the newly formed Elite Program.
The Regatta’s that we’ll be attending this summer are:
- Regina Sprints – June 14
- Prairie Champs – June 28/29
- BC Champs – July 11-13
- The Alberta Open – July 12
- The Royal Canadian Henley – August 3-10
